Tehran

Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami has condemned an apparent smear campaign launched against him by ultra- conservative elements, ISNA news agency reported Thursday. According to ISNA, the hardline Tehran daily Siassat-e Rouz reported last week that 'a former high-ranking official,' had publicly shaken hands with women during a visit to Italy earlier this year.

Although the daily made no reference to the former president, who currently heads the International Centre for Dialogue Among Civilizations, Khatami is the only senior Iranian official to have recently visited Italy.

A six-minute video of him shaking hands with women, apparently tourists, in Italy was later posted on websites aligned to the conservatives, who harshly oppose Khatami's reform ideas and his vision of an Islamic democracy.

Describing the recording as 'false and manipulated (edited from two different videos),' Khatami's office also condemned the charges as both immoral and un-Islamic.

Men touching women in public, including shaking hands, is a state taboo in Islamic Iran, especially as far as clerics such as Khatami are concerned.

Observers, who consider the video to be genuine, however say that the incident gained more popularity for Khatami due his openness towards women. Furthermore many consider that those offended by the hand-shaking oppose the cleric anyway, due to his reform-minded policies.

Together with ex-president Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, Khatami is currently regarded as head of the reformist-moderate coalition which plans to run in parliamentary elections next March against the Abadgaran party, which is close to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and dominates the legislative body.

The ultimate aim of the reformist-moderate coalition is to prepare grounds for replacing Ahmadinejad in the 2009 presidential elections.
