Non abbiamo motti fissi, alla casbah. Li scegliamo di volta in volta. L'ultima volta, comunque, la scelta è stata facile: "We do not want to publish the address of the
Internet site where this film can be seen, in order to avoid propagating corruption in society" (siasat-e rouz & agence france presse, 11.6.07)

In May 2007, a video was released showing Mohammad Khatami publicly shaking hand with several female participants of a conference in Italy where he was an invited speaker. Any physical contact with a person of opposite sex is considered an Islamic taboo in Iran since 1979 revolution. However, videos and pictures circulating on the Internet show Khatami shaking hands with several women.[20]
The footage shows the president speaking to and then exchanging a handshake with Gianola and Cristina Nonnino, well known local producers of grappa, or husk brandy, in the northeastern Italian city of Udine.[21]
Back in Iran, he was severely criticised by the conservative press for his "immoral behaviour". In reaction, he denied the hand shaking in a statement issued by Baran institute where he is the director.[22] Khatami claimed that the film is a fake one.[23][24] However those who took the photos and some other participants of the event confirmed that Khatami indeed shook hand with several women and the videos were not edited.[25][26][27][28][29]
However, Sadegh Kharrazi who accompanied him in the tour, indirectly confirmed the hand shaking. "In the crowd, it is possible a hand was shaken but the former president is against any physical contact between the sexes," said Sadegh Kharrazi, a former ambassador.[30] Previously in 2005 Khatami denied shaking hands and chatting with Iranian born Israeli president Moshe Katsav.
Websites close to the ultraconservative government of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad such as Rajanews and Ansarnews said that an increasing number of clerics in the holy Shiite city of Qom believe that Khatami should be convicted for his behaviour.[31]
