from: roozaugust 8, 2007In their complaint, the clerics refer to several video clips available in the Internet showing Khatami conversing and shaking hands with women. Khatami’s office and the former president himself insist that the clips have been manipulated, but the clerics have attached a CD to their complaint containing a clip from Khatami’s visit to Italy.According to Norooz website, the clerics have asked for the “arrest, trial, defrocking and punishment” of Khatami. Officials at the Special Clerical Court have promised to follow up on the clerics’ complaint. The news of the complaint was first reported by Raja News, a website known to be an unofficial forum for Ahmadinejad supporters. Several other websites affiliated with the administration had reported earlier that efforts were underway to collect signatures to file a complaint against Khatami.
Reformists have interpreted the recent effort by hardline clerics as a scenario to damage Khatami’s reputation ahead of the upcoming Majlis elections. Norooz website, which is affiliated with the reformist Islamic Iran Participation Front [“Hezb-e Mosharekat”] connects the recent effort to Khatami’s active role in organizing the reformist camp.
Former presidential spokesperson, Abdollah Ramezanzadeh, believes, “In my opinion, this is not a pressure on the person of Khatami, but is a reaction to the pressure imposed by the public opinion on the hardliners who have now reverted to a strategy of creating issues in order to divert public opinion from the nation’s deteriorating economic and political condition.”
The complaint also states that, during his presidency, Khatami inflicted “heavy and irreversible blows to the nation and the country’s constitution.” Currently, the complaint alleges, “While wearing the holy clerical garb, [Khatami] appears in public and, in front of the mass media and propaganda networks, undermines the norms and laws of Islam, flirts with women and touches their bodies, an act that is Haram [forbidden] by Islamic laws and norms.”
The clerics also claim, “Touching the bodies of foreign women, as it appears on video clips available on the Internet, sparks a horrific crisis, propagating a culture of sexual deviation and increasing prostitution.”
The clerics also quote several of Khatami’s speeches while president as evidence that the former president suffers from “practical, intellectual and ideological deviations.”
